In February 2020, pupils from Ysgol Pentre, Ysgol Y Garth and Ysgol Froncysyllte took part in a Ready, Steady Read event to raise money for their schools in order to buy new books. The fundraiser was organised by independent Usborne organiser, Laura Rowlands, who set the children the challenge of raising enough money to buy a pile of books taller than her.

Overall, the children raised £882.50, which Usborne added £529.50 to, giving them a grand total of £1412 to spend on books, without having to use any of the schools budgets.

Laura initially visited the schools in February of 2020 to launch the fundraiser, where the children were given sponsor forms to collect any donations. The donated funds were originally supposed to be collected in March, but due to the Covid-19 restrictions coming into force, this was pushed forward to September instead. Once the money was collected from the teacher Laura had been liasing with, the books were delivered in November, with social distancing measures in place.

Laura Rowlands said "I absolutely love working with schools, this is one of my favourite parts of the business as I am able to put amazing books into the hands of so many children all at the same time, and it's all because of their own efforts! I love seeing the faces of the children (and the staff) when I deliver their huge orders. I can't wait to sign up my next school to work with, especially with World Book Day coming up in March."

The purpose of the fundraiser was to allow the pupils to buy new books for their schools, without having to use the schools budgets. A £600 target was originally set to put them into the bracket for 60% extra free books.

Overall, the children did a fantastic job of beating their target and earning their new books. The children managed to buy so many new books, Laura could not fit them all into the boot of her car on the delivery day. This was a tremendous effort from all of the children involved, who should be very proud of themselves.

Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions in Wales, Laura is offering her Ready, Steady, Read fundraisers to schools remotely. Teachers and children do not have to come to school to take part and sponsor forms can be emailed out to pupils.

If you are interested in hosting a Ready, Steady, Read event and you would like more information, please contact Laura through her Usborne Facebook page here. You do not have to be a local school as the books you earn can be delivered directly to your school.
